The Family Gateway

The Family Gateway is the Regional System of Care for Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties in north central Indiana. It is hosted by Oaklawn, the Community Mental Health Center in both counties. Its primary partners include school districts in both counties, the juvenile justice system in both counties, the Indiana Department of Child Services, families and a vast array of community partners who support children with mental health challenges. The Family Gateway is supported by a grant from the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration – Division of Mental Health and Addiction. It is governed by a Consortium of stakeholders from all these interests.

The primary mission of the Family Gateway is: “To make a difference for children with mental health challenges and their families by expanding the possibilities for their support throughout Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties.”

Vital to the System of Care is the family voice. Elkhart County has a family involvement group called The Parent SOURCE. It is family led and provides education, support and advocacy for families of children and youth in the broader System of Care. The Parent SOURCE is a county chapter of the National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health. The Parent SOURCE has a presence on Facebook and can be reached by e-mail at

St. Joseph County families have named their family involvement group, The Parent’s Connection. Led and supported by families, they meet regularly to support each other and their children in the System of Care. The Parent’s Connection has a web presence at with information about meetings and ways to connect with the group.
